Two groups of pharmaceuticals, immunomodulatory agents and steroids, are usually prescribed for autoimmune conditions. Unfortunately, both types of drugs have potentially life-threatening side effects as they suppress your immune system. When functioning properly, your immune system prevents infections and kills precancerous cells. Patients taking immunomodulatory agents have a significantly increased risk for developing fatal infections and several types of cancer. Steroids also cause weight gain, high blood pressure, high blood sugars, osteoporosis, cataracts, and insomnia. Taking these toxic drugs should be avoided if at all possible.
