The real power of eating a truly healthy diet is not weight control, rather it is the powerful protection you get against disease. There are a number of diseases, such as diabetes and sleep apnea, that are usually a direct result of being overweight. But there are many other diseases, such as cancers, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and dementia, that frequently occur in normal weight people, too. In fact, many of these diseases are increasing in prevalence, even among normal weight people, and they are becoming more and more common among younger age groups.

Our genes aren’t changing that fast.

Perhaps the most confusing topic in health today is the relationship between food and disease. One day the news headlines say a certain food is good for you, just to be contradicted the next day by some "new" medical study that says to avoid it. We are scared away from “toxic veggies,” and studies show that beer protects against osteoporosis. Seriously? With so much conflicting and biased information out there, how do you know what to believe?

At Cleveland Nutrition, our doctor has reviewed thousands of medical studies relating diet to disease. We cut through the hype and teach you the unbiased truth. You might not always like what we tell you, but the truth is the truth. We can’t change it. But knowing the truth can be incredibly empowering. Once you learn exactly why and how nutrient-poor foods cause disease, and how nutrient-rich foods protect against disease, you’ll be more motivated to eat healthier, and you won’t be confused by misleading advertising “headlines” anymore. The causative link between diet and chronic diseases is clear. The typical American diet leads to typical American diseases.

What about typical American medical care?

The diet advocated by the American Heart Association has been shown to "slow the progression" of heart disease, but does not stop or reverse heart disease. The American Diabetes Association diet has been designed to help you "manage" your diabetes, but does not improve insulin resistance, the underlying cause of type 2 diabetes. Our dietary approach, in contrast, can actually reverse these and other diseases. This approach has been validated in medical studies, and we see this occur consistently in our clinic. Our patients are grateful for their recoveries.

As you probably already know, our current medical system is primarily reactive in nature, rather than proactive. We’ve been led to rely on fancy, expensive diagnostic testing, and gee-whiz, cutting edge therapies and medications that may be moderately effective at masking some of the signs and symptoms of disease, but they usually do nothing to stop the underlying disease progression. In addition, these lifelong therapies often have negative side effects as well.

When we rely on “the best medical care” to deal with our health problems, we are refusing to take personal responsibility for our health. When we use it as a “permission slip” to continue our bad habits, we are only fooling ourselves.

But if you are willing to take control of your own health, we can help you achieve the best health possible through optimal nutrition. When you change your diet to one that is exceptionally high in disease-fighting micronutrients, and is no longer disease-promoting, you give your body the tools it needs to activate its own biological repair mechanisms. Hormone and insulin levels adjust back to normal, inflammation subsides, arteries begin opening up again, and precancerous cells can be targeted and destroyed by your immune system. Once you stop interfering with your body's attempts to heal itself, medications can often be reduced or eliminated altogether. This is not holistic alternative voodoo. This is biology at its core. Let it work as intended. You don’t have to be another American disease statistic.
